Geocell, geogrid and geotextile get mixed up constantly โ they all look like “black plastic mesh,” but each solves a different ground-engineering problem. Here’s how to tell them apart and choose the right one for your UAE project.
Geotextile โ separation & filtration
A fabric (woven or non-woven) that lets water pass while holding soil back. Use it under stone pitching, under roads, and as a filter or cushion layer so fine soil doesn’t clog drainage or wash out. If your problem is “the layers are mixing” or “the slope erodes under the stone,” you need geotextile.
Geogrid โ reinforcement
A stiff grid that grips soil and spreads load, letting you build steeper slopes, retaining walls and stronger sub-bases over weak ground. If your problem is “this slope or wall won’t stay up” or “the ground is too soft to build on,” that’s geogrid.
Geocell โ confinement
A 3D honeycomb you fill with soil, gravel or concrete to lock it in place on slopes and soft ground. If your problem is “the fill keeps sliding down the slope” or “I need a stable access road on sand,” that’s geocell.
Quick decision guide
- Erosion under stone / drainage filter โ Geotextile
- Steep slope, retaining wall, weak sub-base โ Geogrid
- Slope-surface stability, load support on sand โ Geocell
Most real projects use two or three together โ e.g. a geotextile filter plus geocell confinement on a lagoon embankment. We supply all three and install them with our own crew across the UAE.
