Geocell vs Geogrid: Which Soil Reinforcement Do You Need?

Geocell and geogrid are both geosynthetic soil-reinforcement products, and they’re often confused. They solve related problems in different ways โ€” here’s how to tell them apart and choose.

How each one works

Geocell โ€” confinement

HDPE geocell is a three-dimensional honeycomb. You fill the cells with soil, sand or gravel, and the walls confine that infill so it can’t spread under load. That turns loose fill into a stiff, load-bearing layer โ€” ideal for slope protection, access roads, load platforms and channel lining.

Geogrid โ€” tension

Geogrid is a flat mesh with open apertures. Soil locks into the apertures, and the grid carries tension that the soil can’t โ€” reinforcing retaining walls, steep embankments and paved sub-bases so they stay stable.

Quick comparison

Which should you use?

If you’re stabilising a surface or slope and want to hold infill in place, reach for geocell. If you’re reinforcing a mass of soil to carry tension โ€” a wall or embankment โ€” reach for geogrid. Many projects use both, along with geotextile for separation and filtration.
