When you’re lining a pond, lagoon or reservoir, the two liners you’ll compare most often are HDPE and PVC. Both hold water โ but they behave very differently under the UAE sun and over the long term.
UV & heat resistance
This is where the Gulf climate matters most. UV-stabilised HDPE geomembrane is built for long-term exposed use and holds up to intense sun and heat. PVC is more prone to becoming brittle over time when exposed, so it’s usually specified for covered or buried applications rather than fully exposed ones.
Chemical resistance & lifespan
HDPE has excellent chemical resistance, which is why it’s the standard for containment, wastewater and landfill work. For a well-specified, welded HDPE liner, a long service life is normal. PVC is flexible and easy to handle but generally has a shorter exposed lifespan.
Welding & joints
- HDPE โ joined by heat (wedge or extrusion welding) into a continuous, leak-tested seam. Strong and monolithic.
- PVC โ can be solvent- or heat-welded; flexible and forgiving on complex shapes, but seams are typically less robust than HDPE welds.
Which should you choose?
For most UAE lagoons, reservoirs, canals and exposed containment, HDPE is the durable default โ it takes the sun, resists chemicals and welds into a watertight whole. PVC still has a place on smaller, sheltered or intricately shaped water features. Not sure?
