Stone pitching is one of the oldest and most reliable ways to protect a slope from erosion โ a layer of stone placed over a prepared surface to armour it against flowing water and wave action. Here’s what it is, where it’s used across the UAE, and when to choose it.
How stone pitching works
Stones are laid by hand or machine over a graded slope, usually on a geotextile filter layer that stops the soil beneath from washing out. The stone armour absorbs the energy of water so the slope underneath stays intact. It can be laid dry (stones interlocked) or grouted (bound with mortar) for higher-energy locations.
Where it’s used
- Channel & canal banks โ protecting the sides of drainage and irrigation channels.
- Embankments & slopes โ road and site embankments exposed to runoff.
- Shorelines & lagoons โ edges exposed to wave action.
- Culvert inlets/outlets โ where concentrated flow would otherwise scour the ground.
Stone pitching vs geocell slope protection
Both armour a slope, but differently. Stone pitching is a traditional stone armour โ heavy, durable and well-suited to water-facing edges. HDPE geocell confines infill (soil, gravel or concrete) in a honeycomb, giving a lighter, faster, vegetation-friendly finish on longer slopes. On many UAE projects the two are used together โ geocell up the slope, stone pitching at the water line.
